Sorry, but the answer is 9. PEDMAS is correct -- however the M/D and A/S should be solved from left to right.
See steps 3 and 4 on this website: http://hrsbstaff.ednet.ns.ca/norril/pedmas.htm.

Since multiplication and division are considered the same "rank" when considering PEMDAS, you would have to go left to right once you solved for (1+2) wich of course = 3. So from there, reading LEFT to RIGHT, 6/2*3. 6/2=3. 3*3=9. LEFT to RIGHT people, just like how we read lol.

Does anyone remember the order or operation P. E. M. D. A. S. The only reason I remember it is because we had a saying for it: Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally!

THE ANSWER IS 9... 6/2(2+1)..... (2+1)=3 6/2=3 = 3(3)=9 PARANTHESES MEAN MULTIPLY.
Elizabeth N Dominic:
August 9, 2012 at 10:45 am
The answer is 9 and here is why: 6 divided by 2 = 3 then multiply your 3 by the sum of what is isn parenthases ---> 1+2 = 3 so 3 times 3 = 9 BTW - while looking through theses comments, I find it so sad that someone was so lazy that they actually googled this problem. There is no hope for our future generations! :(
Elizabeth Young Wright:
March 8, 2012 at 10:08 pm
google says 9.
Alison Bunnën:
March 8, 2012 at 11:14 pm
Rachelle Defo Actually it is 9. Use a scientific calculator! PEMDAS- Multiplication and division are interchangeable and so are addition and subtraction.
March 8, 2012 at 11:57 pm
Rachelle Defo Actually, like I said before, multiplication and division are interchangable meaning they are different ways of expressing the same operation so they hold equal precedence. So you do the problem left to right 6/2(1+2). 6/2(3). 3(3)= 9. Trust me, look it up.
Karen Griffin-Ratliff:
Alison Bunnën ....so if they are interchangeable then both answers are right???
March 8, 2012 at 11:59 pm
Karen Griffin-Ratliff no, PEMDAS still applies, you do math problems left to right not right to left.
March 9, 2012 at 12:25 am
Alison Bunnën..... right you always multiply before you divide.....
March 9, 2012 at 12:48 am
Karen Griffin-Ratliff No you do not, I never said that. You always use PEMDAS and the left to right rule for multiplication vs division and addition vs subtraction. Here are a few sites to help you understand: http://www.studygs.net/pemdas/ http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/48293 http://wikis.engrade.com/orderofops

Multiplication and Division go left to right. Multiplication is NOT always before division
March 9, 2012 at 1:45 am
Multiplication and division (and addition and subtraction) are interchangeable, as Alison said. So, when faced with a choice between multiplication and division, you solve from left to right. The answer is 9.
6/2(1+2) = 6/2(3) = 3(3) = 9
There's nothing to debate! Haha
George Odell:
March 9, 2012 at 8:36 pm
actually you're completely wrong, you're shifting the terms in the parenthesis to the denominator when they're clearly being multiplied by the fraction 6/2, to be made more clear, it should be read as: 6/2 * (1+2) 3*(3) =9
Jacqueline Renee Heim:
March 11, 2012 at 11:59 am
Rachelle Defo when you run into just multiplication and division steps you solve from left to right. Answer 9.

There should be no one looking on google or anything like that, the answer is ONE (1)!

These comments alone should be on NoWay.com and the answer is 9 its not even a hard problem to figure out and debate here!

Like I said the answer is one. 1) its "pemdas" that is the ORDER. do NOT interchange the multiplication and division order because that world be out of order -_- 2) if you had to use google or a calculator for this, you shouldn't be commenting...let alone arguing your point

I'm just happy that THIS was the picture that received the most educated answers of all the posts I've seen so far. at least we have some intelligent debate for a change. and yes, the answer is 9.

Ridiculous comments and answers on this post makes me feel sorry for this generation..this is sad. I hope the some of these people do not become accountants or financial advisors. Smh. Or anything that deals with SIMPLE math.

Really? Reading some of the comments below make me wonder how people got out of Junior High... Look again, parenthesis first... also is a calculator really needed for single digit numbers?

both are the operation on the calculater sare different one add the parantesis to the 3 then divided the other one did it the way everyone says.
