That is how people straightened their hair, why do you think we call the kind we have now a flat 'iron'? Its just a smaller more convenient version of a clothes iron. This is basically like someone starting their own fire and cooking food over the flame instead of using a microwave. Nothing wrong...just would be better to use the kind we have now since its faster.

It's actually quicker...just more uncomfortable (for obvious reasons) and easier to burn someone's hair. But I've ironed someone's hair before. She had a MASSIVE amount of hair and I REFUSED to use some little bitty flat iron and be there ALL DAY. Ironed it this way first and did little root touch ups where needed. Took half the time it usually took for her head.
